I recently found an article on how to improve your writing skills for college students. Many of these mistake that are listed in this article are ones that I often make. I
thought this might be helpful to some students to help them with writing.
Here are some tips...
1. Trying to sound like a dead person: This jsimply
means trying to mimic the original author’s style. Find your own style of writing!
2. Expecting someone to hand you a prompt: Professors
shouldn’t find a need to give you a prompt on your papers.
3. Writing long paragraphs: Trying to shove too much
information into one paragraph could make your paper seem elementary or not as good as it could
be.
4. Avoiding profanity at all costs: When writing a paper you
should probably still avoid this but when writing a novel or poem, profanity could get
your point across better. Use your judgement.
5. Leaning on Source: Try to put a little bit of your opinion, even if it's a
research paper. Drowning a paper with quotations and sources might get you the page
requirement but will give you one dull paper.
6. Staying detached: This is simply not engaging in what you
are writing.
7. Listening to “Authority” too much: This means losing your
focus and your mind set because of what others think is best for your paper or novel
or anything you are writing!
Of course, listen to the guildelines and don’t fail, but
don’t put too much thought into what our professor says about what works. Follow what works
for you!
I hope some of this incite helps you become a better writer!
