Has the authenticity and truth been taken out of media ?

After watching and reading the news reports about the Boston Marathon tragedy, I became frustrated with the media once again. In similar fashion as previous incidents, the same information was repeated me for hours.

"Analysts" gave their opinions on what they thought happened, and news reporters beat me over the head with obvious information. As a former communications major I learned that the media was supposed to be non-bias, and that they were supposed to bring nothing but the truth to the consumer.

But that's the exact opposite of what's actually happening. Reporters are so anxious to be the first to report that they will go on national television and report garbage instead investigating to find the truth.

Wale, Kirko Bangz, and White Panda to preform at Buffalo State SpringFest

With the semester coming to an end, anticipation for end of the year festivities is beginning to grow. A major topic of discussion amongst Buffalo State College students, other college students from various schools in the area, and the Buffalo community is the Buffalo States Springfest on May 11th; featuring rappers Wale and Kirko Bangz, and DJ White Panda.

In reference to choosing an artist for Springfest, we can only imagine how difficult it is to attempt to please the masses. Buffalo State College is a very diverse campus, (and in saying that, diversity would expectantly affect the preferences of those who attend) Wale, in my opinion is an excellent choice to be this year’s headliner.

The Grammy nominated artist has a great variety of music and numerous notable features on many of today’s most popular artist’s songs. Kirko Bangz is also another great choice due to his versatility to be able to both rap, as well as sing.

Overall, it is expected to be a great turnout for this year’s Springfest, and for only $5 with your Buffalo State ID, it would be a great way to spend your Saturday!

Be Yourself

After being at a conference this weekend, I simply wanted to share one thing that stood out to me at a workshop, which is to be yourself ! As students there is so much pressure to fit in, but its so much more appealing to just be yourself despite what anyone else believes. In being yourself you will achieve much more, and break boundaries you didn’t even know were possible! With that being said I wanted to share a poem, and allow you all to think about it ...

The Boy Who Wanted to Make a Difference

There was a young man growing up in the lower eastside of Buffalo, NY. He was almost

finished completing high school and couldn’t wait to be in college. He felt as though college

brought maturity, new horizons and most importantly, freedom. As the school year drew to an end,

the acceptance letters became to pour in, each starting with “Congratulations”! The young man

was so excited that all his hard work and dedication to his academics and extracurricular

activities had finally paid off. With so many options to choose from, the young man had tough

decisions to make, would he choose a social campus or a campus focused more on academics?

The DREAM Act

A Student Complaint

When we look at a student, what is it that we infer? What are our thoughts that conjure forth

a set of tinted shades? The following is an excerpt from an interview conducted by myself

on Feburary 7, 2013. The subject is a “continuing student”.

Their experience, thus far, consists of a clear separation between the academic

and administration sectors of BSC; the academic sector fosters a friendly, engaging

environment. However, the administration support, e.g., student affairs, health service,

is “hostile.” Such hostilities experienced by the individual include comments made from

administrative staff as, “Drop out of school”, due to financial reasons, for older students

tend to have more deductions, and financial assets. The student notes that financial aid

is structured to deal with the “traditional student” needs, and not for “continuing students.”

Student affairs, such as health insurance--more particularly the health insurance fee at

BSC--do not accord with the Obamacare initiative. The fee is $2000 and, as the student

notes, “is age-specific.” Furthermore, the student notes that, “The College needs to start

addressing the health fee policy so to accord with the Obamacare initiative. Also, the

student went to the student affairs office to seek assistance in terms of his/her financial

standing, which they replied, “You should move to South Carolina to live with your sister.

The student feels that such a statement stems from a commitment by the said campus

entities to be “selective”, only serving the need of the general traditional student population.

This also may suggest that the student should become someone else’s problem.

What a calamity we live in and have to witness. Man striking down man for superficial

reasons. No wonder there is so many tinted shades when the sky is light, and dark.

Away or Stay? : My Experience of Going Away to College

Kindness is a very BIG thing!

Every one of our greatest national treasures, our liberty,

enterprise, vitality, wealth, military power, global

authority, flow from a surprising source: our ability to

give thanks.

-Tony Snow

When we are angry, it is easy to complain and project our aggressions

and frustrations onto someone else so that they may carry the burden

instead of us. We are quick to judge, and even quicker to make a

great noise, sometimes without stopping and appealing to the logic of

a situation.

I ask of us all, where is that same intensity when another human being

shows the most virtuous of characteristics: kindness. Where is our call

to arms to show someone that their actions or words of thoughtfulness

and caring are truly appreciated? When do we go out of our way to

show compassion and encouragement to our fellow man and woman?

The reality that we live in is that negativity and positivity must coexist,

they are the catalysts for change, but imagine this scenario if you will:

If we all committed one act of appreciation every day for every act

of depreciation we carry out. Accentuate the positive people and

experiences of our lives; make the good with the bad.

Outstanding leaders go out of their way to boost the

self-esteem of their personnel. If people believe in

themselves, it's amazing what they can accomplish.

How to improve your writing skills: For College Students

I recently  found an article on how to improve your writing skills for college students. Many of these mistake that are listed in this article are ones that I often make. I thought this might be helpful to some students to help them with writing.
Here are some tips...

1. Trying to sound like a dead person: This jsimply means trying to mimic the original author’s style. Find your own style of writing!
2. Expecting someone to hand you a prompt: Professors shouldn’t find a need to give you a prompt on your papers.

3. Writing long paragraphs: Trying to shove too much information into one paragraph could make your paper seem elementary or not as good as it could be.
4. Avoiding profanity at all costs: When writing a paper you should probably still avoid this but when writing a novel or poem, profanity could get your point across better. Use your judgement.
5. Leaning on Source: Try to put a little  bit of your opinion, even if it's a research paper. Drowning a paper with quotations and sources might get you the page requirement but will give you one dull paper.
6. Staying detached: This is simply not engaging in what you are writing.
7. Listening to “Authority” too much: This means losing your focus and your mind set because of what others think is best for your paper or novel or anything you are writing!

Of course, listen to the guildelines and don’t fail, but don’t put too much thought into what our professor says about what works. Follow what works for you!

I hope some of this incite helps you become a better writer!
